Sign our petition urging President Obama to reschedule marijuana and end the war on patients and caregivers.
This week, agents from the DEA and IRS raided Oaksterdam University, arresting founder and Prop 19 sponsor Richard Lee.1
Richard is confined to a wheelchair and, after learning about the palliative qualities of medical marijauna, started Oaksterdam as the first industry training facility of its kind. This senseless raid has now forced Richard out of the business he loves.2
Because marijuana is a Schedule I substance with the likes of heroin and ecstasy, it didn’t matter that Richard worked responsibly alongside local law enforcement. Even though operating an organization like Oaksterdam is completely legal in California, federal agents still conduct the very raids that President Obama repeatedly opposed on the campaign trail.3
President Obama can reschedule marijuana without congressional approval, and since he has not lived up to his campaign promises to leave regulation up to the states, we think it’s time to demand real action over words. Can you sign our petition urging President Obama to reschedule marijuana and end the war on patients and caregivers?
There’s a growing consensus among states that marijuana needs to be rescheduled. Several governors have already signaled their support to DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart, but President Obama can do this on his own, without Congress.
Marijuana’s status as a Schedule I substance creates a dangerous legal gray area that unjustly traps people like Richard who are trying to provide a legal service to their community. It’s simply unfair that states can pass marijuana reforms and act upon them, only to be ensnared by the federal government later on.
Last year, the IRS went after Steve D’Angelo and his popular dispensary, Harborside, refusing to grant them standard business deduction and charging them a devastating $2.5 million in back taxes. This penalty has an obvious impact on Harborside’s ability to conduct business, which in turn placed an extra burden on the patients that depend on him for safe access to their medicine.
If marijuana were rescheduled, states would no longer have to work individually to approve medical marijuana initiatives. Rescheduling is an easy federal solution to ending the war on patients, caregivers and state employees.
I hope you will join me in fighting for an immediate solution to this increasingly aggressive war on patients and caregivers.
In solidarity,

Science Says: Lungs Love Weed
A new study, published in this month’s Journal of the American Medical Association, tested the lung function of over 5,000 young adults between 18 and 30. After 20 years of testing, researchers found some buzzworthy results: regular marijuana smokers (defined by up to a joint a day for seven years) had no discernable impairment in lung activity from non-smokers.
In fact, researchers were surprised to find marijuana smokers performed slightly better than both smokers and non-smokers on the lung performance test. Why? The most likely explanation seems to be that the act of inhaling marijuana—holding each puff in for as long as possible—is a lot like a pulmonary function test, giving marijuana smokers an edge over their cigarette smoking counterparts.
